Metalizing Spray Gun
A metalizing gun thermal spraying process variation in which the metallic material to be sprayed is in the molten condition.
Thermal spraying gun, a group of coating processes in which finely divided metallic or non-metallic materials are deposited in a molten or semi-molten condition to form a coating. Metalizing Gun coating material may be in the form of wire, powder, ceramic rod, or molten materials.
The metalizing gun is being used today predominantly as a maintenance tool for the repair and rebuilding of machinery. It is also being to a greater extent than ever in the manufacture of new products, particularly as a means of producing new corrosion-resistant materials. There are so many uses already developed for metalizing in the production of new products, that the handwriting on the wall of postwar activity is quite evident.
Metalizing Gun Process
Their system consisted of a metalizing gun, a furnace, an air compressor, and a fuel supply. The gun had various air and gas valves, a heating room (burner), a nozzle, a handle, and a melting container. The pot was bulky having the ability to store 1.8 kg (4 lb) of molten lead. The vessel sat atop the heating room, which was similar in construction to a Bunsen burner. Compressed air, fed to the burner, intensified the flame. The handle jutted out and downward from the container; it was isolated ( insulated ) using wood and asbestos. Metal exited the container through a front orifice where it was delivered into a sand blasting nozzle. Compressed air encircled the nozzle, atomizing the molten metal and impelling it to the surface to be coated.
Metalizing gun Advantages include
- cheap raw materials
- use of inexpensive gases
- gun design is very basic
Uses for the metalizing gun thermal spray process include
- the fabrication of molds.
- masks and forms for the plastics industry.
- using low melting point bismuth-based alloys (the Cerro family of alloys).
- the deposition of solder alloys to joints that would be coalesced using torches or ovens.
- the production of metal powders.
